We have our party of heroic leaders onboard a warship from the Federated Republic of Humanity. What do those characters look like, broadly speaking?
My thinking here is that the game is played in four modes: Exploration, Combat, Trade, and Social. Every character should have some capacity to interface with all four modes, even if they specialize in one in particular.
So let's write out some concepts for character classes:
Combat+Exploration: Captain
-Knows other ship captains, gets rumors (pre-adventure Exploration)
-Piloting the ship through hazards (mid-adventure Exploration)
-Well-trained ship crew make for good all-around soldiers (Combat)
-Orbital bombardment (Combat)
-Officer and a gentleman (Social)
Combat+Social: Priest
-Low HP, high morale fanatic followers (Combat)
-Strong against supernatural stuff (Combat)
-Good at public speaking (Social)
-Access to social channels via religious status (Social/Exploration)
Trade+Social: Spymaster
-Black markets (Trade)
-Information Network (Trade/Exploration)
-Blackmail (Social)
-Good at reading people and manipulating them (Social)
-Sneaky units in combat (Combat)
Trade+Exploration: Corporate
-Gain access to additional resources (Trade)
-Get better deals (Trade)
-Corporate contacts provide leads and opportunities (Exploration)
-Good at logistics and optimizing trade routes (Exploration)
-Deploy disposable interns as chaff (Combat)
Social+Exploration: Science
-Long range scans (Exploration)
-Repair archaeotech/xenotech (Exploration)
-Communicate with academics, navigate intelligentsia (Social)
-Scientific clout can be hard to argue with if you're not intellectual too (Social)
-Find the weakness in their energy shields (Combat)
Combat+Trade: Engineering
-Provide novelty PC gear (Combat)
-Use heavy ordinance (Combat)
-Build mines and factories (Trade)
-Optimize/upgrade the trade fleet (Trade)
-Reverse engine polarity and full power to shields (Exploration)
