Wilderness Random Encounter Generator

I've put together a small random encounter system for myself, based heavily on Welsh Piper's tables. https://www.welshpiper.com/ruinous-ruins/ The bold text at the bottom is randomly selected (you can choose a random cell in Google Sheets using =INDEX(B3:B8,RANDBETWEEN(1,6)) so that I don't have to roll actual dice and then refer to the table. (I'm aware that the Google Sheets die roller is unlikely to be truly random but I consider the time saved a worthwhile tradeoff)

The Goblin Punch Guy always puts small text centered under his pictures

So here, I have "A proud, formidable humanoid is returning successfully from an information-gathering patrol." (I'm using patrol pretty loosely here). I'm going to interpret that as "Sassandra Gairleth (a potent fighter and a member of the Gairleth clan) has just visited the main settlement and the other clan strongholds asking about her missing sister, and turned up a few leads that she'll report back to her mother, and might potentially share with the PCs." (I'm also going to actually write down what those leads ARE, but my PCs might be reading.) If combat were even remotely on a table, I'd also write down her gear and stats and treasure.

This is mostly a mockup because I wanted to write this post more than I wanted to write 18 random encounters this morning

These notes go into a cell on the Random Encounter Pile. Each adventuring day and night, I roll 1d12 and slot in whatever's in the Active slot. EXAMPLE: I roll an 8 at the start of the day, so no encounter. That night, I roll a 2 and introduce the Terrified Owlbear. Then, the next thing falls into the empty slot. (So Sassandra would be assigned to 2.)

I'm also introducing a houserule that Long Rests require a degree of safety and comfort unavailable in the wilderness. This will both soften the problems I addressed in my last article, and naturally encourage the party to say things like "Let's detour over and visit the Gairleths on our way to the dungeon. We can have a bath and a good meal before we tackle the acid squid sorcerers" which feels right.

I think that this prompt-generator, combined with my philosophical post yesterday, should put me in a good place for running the wilderness. With that in mind, I'm ready to tackle KO Consequences.
